Best Window, 7 Years

From the historic agreement at the 21st UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP) in 2015 to limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2050, the challenge is clear: halve emissions by 2030, granting us ONLY 7 years to act.

As we approach COP28 in the UAE (30 Nov – 12 Dec 2023), a pivotal moment emerges to reshape the climate agenda. This COP, set in Asia, offers a significant opportunity to reimagine, reinvigorate, and realign our strategies toward climate action.

The youth don’t merely inherit Earth; they craft its destiny. They are its custodians, innovators, and future torchbearers. Article 87 of COP27’s Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan reverberates this truth:

Youth as Key Stakeholders

“Recognizes the role of children and youth as agents of change in addressing and responding to climate change and encourages Parties to include children and youth in their processes for designing and implementing climate policy and action, and, as appropriate, to consider including young representatives and negotiators into their national delegations, recognizing the importance of intergenerational equity and maintaining the stability of the climate system for future generations;”

Catalyzing Action

In a bid to amplify youth contributions to climate governance, the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC) proposed the establishment of the Global Youth Climate Week (a week scheduled before each COP) in January 2022. This initiative garnered support from over 100 co-initiators spanning continents and sectors, ranging from academia, private enterprise, media, and civil society. The inaugural Global Youth Climate Week, timed ahead of COP27, galvanized momentum for the conference and unequivocally demonstrated society’s broad alignment with youth-led climate action.

Leading Initiator

GAUC was established in 2019 with the mission of providing leadership in global higher education’s efforts to address climate change. GAUC has 15 prestigious member universities from 9 countries across 6 continents. Since its establishment, GAUC has received generous recognition worldwide. The activities provided by GAUC attracted over 300 million global participants (for more information, please go to: https://gauc.net/).
GAUC has been working to inspire youth to investigate the synergy between climate change and other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to tackle complex global challenges by organizing the national, regional, and global levels ‘Climate x’ Campaign.

°Upgrades 2023: A Growing Wave of Youth

Advancing from the Triumph of Last Year’s Event, 2023’s Global Youth Climate Week shines brighter! Like an unstoppable wave, the fervor of youth continues to rise. Over 1,000 students representing 400 universities worldwide stand poised to spearhead a dynamic array of self-organized events during this year’s Week. These students are enrolled in the ‘Climate x’ Leadership Training Program , which is supported by UNFCCC, UNESCO, and other global organizations.

LEARN MORE

Over July, the program has conducted 13 lectures, encompassing 7 workshops on 5 synergetic climate topics and youth leadership.

Enrolled students are required to complete 3 hybrid events from August to November, to put their leadership skills and climate knowledge into practice. The third event is acknowledged as the youth-led event of the 2023 Global Youth Climate Week.
